Winter (16.10 - 14.05) 10.00 - 15.00 The museum of Kizhi was founded in 1966 on the base of Kizhi branch of State museum of regional history of Karelia. By the decree of the President of Russian Federation the museum was included into the list of the Russian national objects of special importence.
Museum Kizhi is responsible for preservation and development of local historical, cultural and natural landscape, formed by world-known Kizhski settlement, other settlements, historical landscapes and monuments located on the Kizhi and neighbouring islands of the Onego lake and the part of its shores inside the territory of former Kizhski volost (district) of Olonets province.
Concerning the concentration of historical objects, Kizhi museum is a unique historical territory which has no competitors in the Russian Europen North. Together with the buildings preserved on their historical locations and moved from other Karelian regions, the museum represents main aspects of traditional culture of local ethnic groups: Karelians, Vepses, Russians.
The museum faces a set of challenges: to collect and restore historical objects, organize tours and other tourist activities, educational work. Besides, the museum holds different research projects targeted at historical and natural inheritance of the Kizhi islands and economic, social and cultural development of the islands.
